Stress Effects on Microglia Activation and Behavior: Sex Matters

      Studies suggest that microglia activation may be a potential biomarker of depression. However, there are also contradictory data suggesting microglia activation is not altered in patients with major depressive disorder. Inconsistencies may stem from sex differences in microglia, their activation status and activation purpose. We will present data demonstrating specific sex differences in microglia activation in response to stress in a preclinical model. These sex differences have functional implications as response to a classical activation inhibitor is sex-specific.
