Disrupted function in neural reward circuitry characterizes depression and has prognostic
value for worsening of symptoms and depression onset. Examining the role of reward
circuitry is particularly important during adolescence, a period marked by ongoing
development in reward circuitry, changes in reward-driven behavior, and the onset
of affective disorders. Reward-circuit function is postulated to underlie anhedonia,
the difficulty with reward motivation or experience that emerges during adolescence
and occurs across several forms of psychopathology. We used sophisticated computational
approaches to investigate the value of reward-circuit function for predicting adolescent
anhedonia.
