Fluctuations of estradiol (E2) in women influence fear extinction. High levels of
E2 engage the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), dorsal anterior cingulate cortex
(dACC) and the amygdala. We explored the effect of E2 administration on the fear extinction
network in healthy women on oral contraceptives using fMRI.
