      Recent animal and human studies have suggested that the parasympathetic state of freezing may facilitate action-preparation and decision-making under acute threat and is essential for adequate stress-coping. However, the neurocognitive mechanisms supporting freezing and the neural switch to sympathetically-driven actions remain unclear in humans. In addition, their role in the development of anxiety symptoms remains unexplored.
