Retraction notice to: “Rett-like Severe Encephalopathy Caused by a De Novo GRIN2B Mutation Is Attenuated by D-serine Dietary Supplement” by David Soto, Mireia Olivella, Cristina Grau, Judith Armstrong, Clara Alcon, Xavier Gasull, Macarena Gómez de Salazar, Esther Gratacòs-Batlle, David Ramos-Vicente, Víctor Fernández-Dueñas, Francisco Ciruela, Àlex Bayés, Carlos Sindreu, Anna López-Sala, Àngels García-Cazorla, and Xavier Altafaj. Biological Psychiatry 2018; 83:160–172.
This article has been retracted at the request of Editor John H. Krystal, M.D.
Throughout this article, the authors report their molecular characterization of a GRIN2B mutation and the subsequent beneficial effects of using a D-serine dietary supplement as a treatment for a patient with Rett-like severe encephalopathy. However, it has come to light that the molecular work was conducted using D-serine, but the dietary supplement prescribed to the patient was actually L-serine. The authors notified the Journal upon this discovery, which was the result of a communication error, where D-serine was substituted with L-serine without the knowledge of the investigators. This led to the inadvertent misrepresentation in the article of the substance actually used in the clinical portion of this study.
This fact not only significantly impacts the text of the entire article, but also requires consideration and discussion of the implications of the mismatch in addition to the completion of further studies to assess other potential contributing factors. Thus, it was determined that the only course of action was retraction. The authors are revising the paper, which the Journal will re-review and consider further for publication.
