The Amount of Mitochondrial DNA in Blood Reflects the Course of a Depressive Episode

      We recently reported an increase in the amount of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) found in the saliva of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) in the China, Oxford and Virginia Commonwealth University Experimental Research on Genetic Epidemiology study (

      ). The association was highly significant (p = 9.00 × 10−42), with an odds ratio for the contribution of the amount of mtDNA to the risk of MDD of 1.33. However, the extent to which the amount of mtDNA reflects changes in mood or some other component of the disease process remains unknown.
