As schizophrenia researchers specializing in the use of brain MRS, we present our
shared concerns regarding the results of van Elst et al. (2005) published in Biological Psychiatry. This study of chronic schizophrenia and healthy controls used standard single-voxel
1H-MRS methodology to acquire and process spectroscopy from the dorsolateral prefrontal
(DLPC) and hippocampal areas. We question the variability and accuracy of the metabolite
concentrations presented in this paper.
